Odds & Sods

Dueling Gibsons - Another superb picture © Richard Stevens taken at the Pheasant, 23rd December 2007
We intend to use this page for stuff that doesn't really fit in anywhere else on this sight. Time permitting I will add a few pictures that were too interesting not to use plus we are looking into the possibility of audio and/or video samples.

Does anybody else remember Elgen amplifiers?

An appeal for information from Chris

Elgen were a manufacturer of valve and solid state amplification based in Queens Road, High Wycombe (up behind the Nags Head) and were in operation between the mid 60s and the mid 70s. Most sported burgundy tolex and pink Plexiglas (later silver) control panels (looks better than it sounds) but other equally lurid colour schemes have been seen. The company was run by Tony 'Monty' Merrell and his drummer friend Bonzo (no, not that one) from local beat group Jimmy Mac and the Beatfinders. Most seem to have gone to the US but Warhorse used to use them as well as local prog rockers Audience. The range included at least lead, bass and PA heads as well as combos and speaker cabinets. That is about as much as I know. I would love to receive any further information at all that anybody has, especially catalogue scans etc. please email us.

I owned a 50 or 60W (at a guess) bass version in the early 80s as the bass player in the band I was in at that time couldn't afford his own gear. It was solid, reliable and sounded good (meant to be based on the 59 Fender Bassman) but I sold it after we got a new, equipped bass player - who also owned a Bedford CF which may have swayed the decision. I didn't appreciate its' local connection at the time (nor was particularly interested) but now I am spending a lot of time inside valve amps I would like to find out more about them. They are not particularly valuable or desirable as vintage amps go but I would love to get hold of a 50/60W Lead (preferably) or bass head in any condition, even not working, to restore.Even better if it was the actual one I had, may still be around locally. I will pay a sensible amount or have several valve amps for trade. If you know of any that are for sale please email us..

The best surviving shot of my Elgen bass head, from an open air gig circa 1983
Whilst on the subject of gear that I have sold on that I wish I hadn't, I also bought A Gibson EBO bass for that band that was sold along with the Elgen. The headstock had broken off and my father spent 6 months hand carving a new one along with the top couple of inches of neck for a finger joint and grafting it on. This was a labour of love on his part and he has never forgiven me for selling it.Would love to get this back, if only to see the look on his face...The tatty 4x12 that went with all this gear is NOT required!

Band Equipment

I have noticed how many bands websites seem to include an in depth list of the equipment (down to the last plectrum) of each band member so I thought you might be interested in what we have.....errr...well, um....some of it's new, most of it's old and not all of it is paid for yet......
Artists impression of what Travelling Shoes equipment might look like © 1984 Gary Smedley (where are you now Gary? Get in touch) - Glad to say that Gary has been in touch and was surprised to see his scribble (his words) from 25 odd (very odd) years ago still in use. He would like to point out that it has been blown up from a 25 year old photocopy and various other deprecatory remarks but I don't care, I still think it's great. Used with grudging permission!

We have several guitars, most of which say Gibson on one end (although Dave's new bass also says Epiphone....but I said I wouldn't mention that) and we have some black boxes that we plug them into through something called a cable I think. Oh yes, we have a PA system and there are also some drums, think that's about it.
